World Environment Day: Integrating eco-conscious choices in daily life is true dharma

What does it mean to live your spiritual values beyond the yoga mat? This reflection explores how the principles of ahimsa, compassion, and reverence for nature can transform the everyday choices we make about what we eat, wear, buy, and consume.

Our spiritual tradition, our dharma, is rooted in tenets and truths that we hold dear and which are inextricably linked with sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyles. For Indians to be contributing to climate change and environmental destruction goes against not only that which is intelligent but also against the very fabric of our own spiritual culture.

We believe deeply in:
1. Ahimsa: the very first yama of the very first limb of the ashtanga (8-limbed) path of yoga given to us by the sage Patanjali is non-violence. To pollute our rivers, air, soil, and groundwater such that our sisters and brothers get sick and die, and such that future generations are deprived of clean water, air, and food is violence. To spew toxins from our factories into the air, water, and soil is violence. To support such industries is also violence. To support eco-friendly, sustainable, green commerce and to live simply such that others may simply live is ahimsa.
