Hindu and Jewish Communities of Greater Pittsburgh Area Come together at Hindu Jain Temple
In a powerful display of solidarity, HH Param Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, Pujya Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati and the Hindu and Jewish communities of the greater Pittsburgh area came together at the Hindu Jain Temple in Monroeville to mark the 5th anniversary of the tragic shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The event aimed to emphasize oneness, togetherness, and unity, while standing against religious violence and promoting peace.
In October 2018, the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh witnessed the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States. The horrific incident resulted in the loss of eleven lives, including several Holocaust survivors, with six others wounded.
At the Hindu-Jain temple, the temple’s founder and spiritual leader HH Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, President of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, India, and Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, President of Divine Shakti Foundation, joined hands with the President, Shri Chetan Patel, Vice-Chairman, Shri Nick Patel, Executive body of the temple and the temple priests to welcome Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, Rabbi of Tree of Life who witnessed and survived the shooting, and Julie Paris, Regional Director of Stand With Us and other leaders of the Jewish community in Pittsburgh.
During the event, the speakers emphasized the core principle of non-violence, deeply ingrained in both the Jewish and Hindu traditions. They highlighted the shared teachings of oneness and unity, and underscored the need for solidarity in the face of adversity.
A heartwarming moment during the program was the joint lighting of the lamp, symbolizing a collective prayer for peace and love to illuminate all hearts and communities. The event concluded with a touching ceremonial breaking of the traditional challah bread, a profound symbol of love, truth, justice, and unity.
In His remarks, HH Pujya Swamiji chanted ancient Vedic mantras and offered the sacred prayer of the Jewish people, the Sh’ma Yisrael, that reaffirms the universal Oneness of God. He shared the meaning of the Hindu Vedic mantras, invoking the timeless truth, “The Truth is One, but the sages call it by different names,” and prayed that “Noble thoughts come to us from all directions.” His experience as a leader of the Hindu-Jewish Summit in Israel added depth and context to His call for collective efforts towards peace and the unequivocal rejection of violence.
Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, coming from a Jewish family in Hollywood, California and residing at Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh, India, for the last 27 years, beautifully expressed her personal connection to both the Jewish and Hindu faiths. “These two traditions coexist within me, enriching my understanding, deepening my experience, and drawing me closer to my own Self and to the Divine.”
The Hindu-Jewish Unity event served as a poignant reminder of the power of unity and compassion in overcoming adversity and fostering peace. It united hearts and minds from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating that, together, we can overcome the darkness of violence and hatred with the light of understanding, empathy, and love.

अक्टूबर 2018 में, पिट्सबर्ग के स्क्विरेल हिल क्षेत्र में ट्री ऑफ लाइफ सिनेगॉग ने संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में यहूदी समुदाय पर सबसे घातक हमला देखा। इस भयावह घटना के परिणामस्वरूप ग्यारह लोगों की जान चली गई और छह अन्य घायल हो गए थे।
हिंदू-जैन मंदिर में, मंदिर के संस्थापक और आध्यात्मिक गुरू परमार्थ निकेतन, ऋषिकेश, के अध्यक्ष स्वामी चिदानन्द सरस्वती जी और डिवाइन शक्ति फाउंडेशन की अध्यक्ष साध्वी भगवती सरस्वती जी ने हिन्दू जैन मंदिर कमेटी के अध्यक्ष, मंदिर कमेटी बोर्ड के उपाध्यक्ष तथा मंदिर के पुजारियों के साथ मिलाकर ट्री ऑफ लाइफ के रबाई जैफरी मायर्स और जीवित बचे रबाई जैफरी मायर्स और स्टैंड विद अस की क्षेत्रीय निदेशक जूली पेरिस और पिट्सबर्ग में यहूदी समुदाय के अन्य नेताओं का अभिनन्दन किया।
कार्यक्रम के दौरान, वक्ताओं ने अहिंसा के मूल सिद्धांत पर जोर दिया, जो यहूदी और हिंदू दोनों परंपराओं में गहराई से निहित है। उन्होंने विपरीत परिस्थितियों में एकजुटता की आवश्यकता को रेखांकित करते हुए एकता और सद्भाव की साझा शिक्षाओं पर प्रकाश डाला।
कार्यक्रम का शुभारम्भ सभी ने दीप प्रज्वलित कर किया जो सभी दिलों और समुदायों को रोशन करने के लिए शांति और प्रेम की सामूहिक प्रार्थना का प्रतीक है। यह कार्यक्रम प्रेम, सत्य, न्याय और एकता का प्रतीक है।
स्वामी चिदानंद सरस्वती ने प्राचीन वैदिक मंत्रों के उच्चारण के साथ उद्बोधन दिया, जिसके बाद यहूदियो कि शमा यिसरेल की पवित्र प्रार्थना हुई, जिसमें ईश्वर से सार्वभौमिक एकता की प्रार्थना की गयी। उन्होंने हिंदू वैदिक मंत्रों का अर्थ साझा करते हुये शाश्वत सत्य का आह्वान करते हुये कहा कि ‘सत्य एक है; प्रभु एक है; ईश्वर एक है लेकिन विद्वानगण इसे अलग-अलग नामों से पुकारते हैं।
स्वामी जी ने कहा कि ’सभी दिशाओं से अच्छे विचार हमारे भीतर प्रवेश करें, अच्छे विचार ही हमारे जीवन और हमारी सृष्टि को सुन्दर और समृद्ध बनाते हैं।’ उन्होंने बताया कि जब वे इजराइल गये तो वहां हिंदू-यहूदी शिखर सम्मेलन के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में उनके अनुभव को भी उन्होंने साझा किया, जिसका प्रभाव शांति की दिशा में सामूहिक प्रयासों और हिंसा की स्पष्ट अस्वीकृति के लिये भी आह्वान किया।
हॉलीवुड, कैलिफोर्निया में एक यहूदी परिवार से आने वाली और पिछले 27 वर्षों से भारत के ऋषिकेश में परमार्थ निकेतन में रहने वाली साध्वी भगवती सरस्वती ने यहूदी और हिंदू दोनों धर्मों के साथ अपने व्यक्तिगत संबंध को खूबसूरती से व्यक्त किया। उन्होंने कहा कि ये दोनों परंपराएँ मेरे भीतर सह-अस्तित्व में हैं जो मेरी समझ को समृद्ध करती हैं और मेरे अनुभव को गहरा करती हैं, और मुझे अपने स्वयं के और ईश्वर के करीब लाती हैं।
हिंदू-यहूदी एकता कार्यक्रम ने प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों पर काबू पाने और शांति को बढ़ावा देने में एकता और करुणा की शक्ति की मार्मिक याद दिलाई। इसने विविध पृष्ठभूमियों के दिलों और दिमागों को एकजुट किया, यह प्रदर्शित किया कि एक साथ मिलकर, हम समझ, सहानुभूति और प्रेम की रोशनी से हिंसा और नफरत के अंधेरे को दूर कर सकते हैं।
