The event brought together all of the NGOs working across the country for the Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti to educate the masses about the importance of organ and body donation. Tragically in India approximately 2 lakhs of people per year are waiting for an organ and only approximately 10% of them receive the organ, due to lack of awareness about the process of organ donation.
The Hon’ble Vice President appealed to the religious leaders and media to encourage people for organ donation by dispelling their doubts and creating awareness on this issue of vital importance. He called organ donation a sensitive issue and emphasised the need for creating a support system for organ donation. Praising Dadhich Deh Dan Samiti for endeavouring to build the right ecosystem in this regard, he wanted these efforts to reach up to family level. “Media and social media have a great role in this mission. Every media person must contribute to spread this well-meaning message,” he added.
Conveying his greetings on the occasion of Maharshi Dadhichi Jayanti today, Shri Dhankhar urged everyone to emulate the life and philosophy of the great Sage for “our own happiness and for giving back to the society.”
Sadhvi Bhagawatiji emphasized that the ability to give life through organ and body donation is a great honor and also a great celebration. “We usually think that only God and mothers can give life. But today, even as a sanyasi, I have learned that through donating my body I can give life to not only 1 or 2 or 3 but actually 8 people! This is an opportunity we all must take.” She emphasized that to have so many people die while they wait for organs is a crime against humanity. “When we have the ability to save lives and we don’t save them, that is a crime. It is like having a loaf of bread and letting a child in front of you die of starvation. It’s a crime.”
Sadhviji also mentioned that there is a myth that if you donate your organs you won’t have them in next life, but she assured everyone that this is not true “whatever we give to others, always comes back to us!” She ended by leading everyone in the audience in a hands-raised pledge that they all would donate their organs and bodies and would share and spread this message.
On this occasion, a book titled “Sakaratmakta se Sankalp Vijay Ka” was also released by Sadhvi Bhagawatiji and she presented the first copy of the book to the Vice President.
