Is it Wrong to Have Pets?
Could anything possibly be wrong with keeping a furry, fuzzy friend at home whom you love and cuddle? Sometimes people worry that if they cage a bird or keep a cat or a dog in the house then in their next life they will be “restricted” as they restricted the animal. So, is it wrong to keep pets? According to Sadhviji, there’s nothing wrong with giving an animal a good, safe and secure life by keeping them as pets. And, in many instances, adopting an animal keeps them from being euthanized or starving on the street. So, certainly that is a good thing! And, it helps us to realize how deeply-connected we can be to those of all species.
And, as Sadhviji shares, our scriptures are full of beautiful stories about the relationship between humans and animals. In one story, Yudhisthira rejects the thought of entering Heaven unless his faithful and loving dog can go with him because the dog is his friend, and to betray his friend would be a very great sin. And, this is a very great teaching because so many of us abandon our friends and loved ones for the slightest offense, and Yudhisthira’s compassion and commitment show us the beauty of remaining loyal to those that have been loyal and loving to us. So, no, it’s doubtful that you’ll have restrictive karma, especially if your pets are being brought into the household as a member of the family. But, be sure that you actually care for the animal – and, that the environment that they’re being brought into is one full of not only safety and security but also comfort and enjoyment for your pet.
