Why do We Worship Idols?
Hindus are not idol worshippers! In addition to the mistaken belief that we Hindus worship multiple gods, there’s also a long-held incorrect impression that we are idol worshippers – that we worship statues… Like the idea that Hinduism is polytheistic, this observation about idol worshipping by those not familiar with the faith is not true. The misconception is understandable, however, because to observers the fact that the object of our attention and devotion in the temples is a beautiful and vibrant sculpture could appear as though we’re worshipping the idol itself, if one didn’t know better.
In this insightful episode from the Tell Me Why Series, Sadhviji so eloquently shares that, in fact, Hindus are not idol worshippers – we are ideal worshippers! Watch and listen as she explains this sacred aspect of our faith tradition!
