Peer Pressure

Have you ever found yourself in a situation doing something you didn’t really want to do just because the people you’re with pressured you to? I know I have! I imagine most of you have as well. Let me share a secret with you about peer pressure. It’s something we’ve all been subjected to, all our lives. We tend to think of pressure only as something in youth, but it actually exists in adulthood as well. Here is the secret: the more people pressure you to do something, the more it means they are NOT actually enjoying themselves! Peer pressure is people trying to convince you how wonderful whatever they are doing is. “Just have one drink you’ll love it!” “Just smoke once you love it!” “Look at us — we’re having such a good time!” But the truth about real joy is that if I am really enjoying something I don’t need to pressure you into doing it. I will be content just to enjoy it. I only need to really pressure you if I am feeling insecure about what I’m doing. So the more someone pressures you to do something the more you can be sure they are NOT really enjoying it. They simply need you to do it as well so they can feel more comfortable about doing it themselves. And if they’re not even enjoying it, why in the world would you join them?! Remember this whenever someone is trying to pressure you to eat, drink, or do something against your wishes or your values: If were really enjoying it so much, they would simply enjoy it, and wouldn’t need you to follow along! So, stay firm in what you know is right for you.
